5 Mistakes to Avoid With Your Social Media

Optimising your social media platforms maximises what you are able to get out of a platform. And when you are spending time creating content, you want it to be seen, not relegated to the black hole of social media content that never sees the light of day.

These are some of the most common mistakes I see people making day to day with their social media… the good thing? They are pretty easy to sort!

1. Talk to YOUR customer. Probably one of the most common mistakes is not talking to your customer. Sometimes it might feel that being too specific is the wrong thing to do and you want to appeal to as many people as possible but actually by being too general and trying to speak to everyone, you actually end up talking to no-one.

Make sure you have an accurate idea of who your customer is (develop a customer profile, sometimes referred to as a customer avatar or a user persona) so you can create content you know they’ll resonate with.

2. Make sure you use CTA’s. Another mistake is not including what you want people to do once they have engaged with your content. Seems obvious but many people need to be told otherwise they don’t do anything.

Do you want people to DM you, download something, click through to your website, sign up, subscribe? Including a simple action for people to take can dramatically increase conversions.

3. Use a variety of platform features. Many people don’t use enough platform features. The more features you use, the more visible you will be. Instagram has A LOT of features; LIVE, video, Stories, Reels, single posts, carousels....It can be hard to keep up let alone use them all but it’s important to try and experiment and see if certain features get you more engagement.

Currently Reels is excellent for maximising reach and discovery. It’s one of the places you’ll gain new followers. Stories are perfect for building the community that you currently have as they are more visible to your followers.

Once you have the LIVE option on TikTok, this can really boost new followers.

4. Engage with others!  Not engaging with other users is a mistake many people make and people often underestimate the power of spending time engaging.

It’s called social media after all and spending time leaving genuine comments on other users accounts will definitely help. Try to spend some time twice a day doing this. Make sure you respond to all the comments that you receive on posts as well as in your DM’s.

Networking will help your brand get discovered and build a community as well as spreading good vibes!

Now, more than ever, social media is about community and authenticity.

5. Check your analytics. Not keeping a tab on how your content is doing can results in wasted time and money. You should be checking how well your posts have been doing and using Google Analytics to see what platforms are driving the most traffic.

Check out those posts and see which are generated the most engagement and most click through. Then spend time creating more content like that.

People need to see content multiple times before taking action so don’t feel you are being repetitive. Plus you will be gaining new followers all the time so you should keep publishing content that sits within your evergreen content pillars.
